Paul Bergman

Years ago, as a little boy on a dairy farm with lots of chores to do, I grabbed free moments whenever I could –always loving the chance to read a new book.  I could get lost in the world of mystery, wonderful animal or sports stories and the lives of historical figures.  Few things made me happier than having a stack of books to take home on the weekend.

That love of reading never left me. It just became a more treasured companion as I moved through my high school years, college and into a career.  I, similarly, found myself drawn to stories enacted on stage.  Part of that credit goes to the gifted drama teacher that graced my seminary years in high school.  From that talented man I realized how theatrical art can soar.  Again and again, I found my eyes opened and heart touched.  Of course, the tickling of the funny bone was alright, as well!  And, whether it be a professional setting or Community theater, I never lost my admiration for those who brought the show to life.

I savored all aspects of theater, especially the writing.  The drama rose and fell with it; the musicals danced with the essence of the words.  It was my good fortune that the love of my life, my wife Barbara, also enjoys a variety of performances.  Although I felt too busy to do any serious writing during my career, I revisited the option after retiring.  Writing a play seemed too far fetched to me. Then, inspired by several dreams and subject matters that have long intrigued me, I began to pull ideas together. Months of research followed, welcoming the storylines represented in Holding History Close.

All levels of history have enriched my days. Looking back, I might well have preferred to have been a teacher of history. Alas, that was not to be.  However, I always thought we could learn from our past, both individually and collectively.  Considering pivotal moments and relationships, it seemed “what and the how” could be nudged a little bit into the “Why?” That is, after all, what we most often want to know. And how could more color be added to it?

Holding History Close allows me an avenue to explore these options and give new subjects a chance to breathe. I hope it will give you, dear reader -- of curious mind and restless wonder -- the chance to discover what appeals to you and the viewers who count on your selections.  I am grateful for your support.
